Ord Minnett Recent Ownership Restructure

IOOF's Divestment from Ord Minnett

On 27 June 2019, an ASX announcement detailed IOOF’s planned divestment of its 70 per cent shareholding in Ord Minnett to a consortium of Australian private investors. The consortium acquired J.P. Morgan’s 30 per cent stake, enabling it to take full ownership of Ord Minnett.

The consortium was led by Karl Morris, Ord Minnett CEO, who was committed to achieving the best outcome for clients, staff and Ord Minnett. The buyout was concluded in September 2019 securing our future as one of Australia’s largest independent private wealth firms. Our competitive advantage is enhanced by the domestic investors with parties aligned to our business values and future growth. Our relationship with J.P. Morgan remains strong and is mutually beneficial with continued access to its research and corporate deal flow.

Ord Minnett acquires E.L. & C. Baillieu

On 5 November 2020, Ord Minnett announced they entered into an agreement to acquire 100% of E.L. & C. Baillieu.

The acquisition of E.L. & C. Baillieu, with nine locations around Australia including Melbourne as its head office, was a welcomed strategic move, further strengthening Ord Minnett as one of Australia’s highly respected and largest independent private wealth firms.

The combination of E.L. & C. Baillieu’s brand heritage and history, private stockbroking business, its adviser network, its client-base and operational synergies enhances Ord Minnett as a respected Australian wealth brand. This new amalgamation serves to benefit Australian investors and clients for many more generations to come.

As of 31 January 2021, including E.L. & C. Baillieu’s figures, Ord Minnett manages over $59 billion in Funds under Advice and $13 billion in Funds under Management.

The Hon. Warwick Smith AO - Chairman

Hon Warwick Smith AO is Chairman of Ord Minnett Investments Limited. Warwick also holds the position of Chairman Advisory Board - Australian Capital Equity, holders of interests in Seven Group Holdings of which he is a Board Director, Seven West Media, Boral, Coates Hire, Beach Energy, WesTrac and Caterpillar industrial services and equipment in Western Australia and New South Wales. He is Director and Commonwealth Nominee of Marinus Link Pty Ltd and is the Lead Independent Director of Jemena Pipeline and Energy. With the Business Council of Australia, Warwick is the Chairman of the Global Engagement Committee.

He has more than 20 years experience in banking and financial services having held senior roles as an Executive Director with the Macquarie Bank Group as well as Chairman New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory and former Senior Managing Director for the ANZ Banking Group Limited which included Chairman of ANZ Bank China and Chairman of ANZ Bank Thailand. He has previously been Chairman of E*TRADE Limited; Board Director of Estia Health Ltd and Chairman of the Australian Sports Commission. He is the immediate past Chairman of the National Museum of Australia, the Australia–China Council and the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations. 

Warwick was an Australian Federal Government Minister with a parliamentary career spanning 15 years. He was also Australia's first Telecommunications Ombudsman and has received a Centenary Medal and twice been awarded an Order of Australia.

Karl Morris AO - Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director

Karl Morris is the Chief Executive and Managing Director of Ord Minnett Ltd, with a career spanning over 36 years in financial services and wealth management. He is a Commerce graduate of Griffith University and holds diplomas from the Stockbrokers and Financial Advisers Association of Australia, FINSIA and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Karl was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) on Australia Day 2019, for distinguished service to the financial and stockbroking sectors, and to the community through a range of organisations.  In 2022, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of the Griffith University for his distinguished service to the financial industry, and for service to the wider community through a range of organisations, including leadership and support of Griffith University.

Karl is Chairman of the Brisbane Broncos Ltd, Chair of Bravehearts Foundation Fund, Patron of the Mary MacKillop Fund, Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (AmCham) Council of Governors in Queensland and National Vice Patron of Bravehearts. He is a Master Member (and former Chair 2012-2018) of the Stockbrokers and Financial Advisers Association of Australia, former Chairman of QSuper (2013-2019) and was also a Board Member of the Australian Catholic University. He also sits on the Investment Committees of the Catholic Archdioceses of Brisbane and Sydney.
